CHAPTER VI

John had never doubted Yelena’s intelligence, her mind was as sharp as her combat skills, but he was very impressed with her idea. It was a good one, and it worked very well. It was something he felt he probably should’ve thought of, but he was never particularly intelligent. His strength lay more in fighting and being stubborn.

They found some building supplies, a few basic pieces of sturdy furniture, and a decent amount of blades, some good pieces of armor, and a handful of hidden gems, sacks of gold, and jewelry that might sell well.

And they stored the big, bulky stuff in the camp-in-a-bag.

It was the perfect storage device.

As soon as they finished up, they walked back to the cabins and spent the rest of that day and almost all of the next cleaning up the cabin a bit more, then making simple repairs to the walls, the floor, the ceiling. They managed to patch some holes in the roofs, replace a few windows, and did some major repairs to the front door of one of the cabins. John knew that it would take quite awhile to get it all shipshape again, but the work felt good, and the relatively slow progress didn’t bother him in the slightest.

It felt like they had all the time in the world.

Despite this, the next day, after the pair of them woke, made love, bathed, (Yelena figured out how to replicate Tanis’s hot water spell after a bit of practice), and ate breakfast, she suggested that they begin focusing their efforts on earning some coin. He figured she had a point, it was time to get back to work in that regard.

So now they were heading up towards another abandoned area that might yield a bit more in the way of currency.

They were going to need a lot of it. John didn’t know exactly how much, but he imagined this kind of thing would cost somewhere north of at least a few thousand gold. Or at least a lot of gold and a healthily hefty bag of rare gemstones.

“What can you tell me about this location we’re visiting?” Yelena asked.

They had been walking for close to two hours in relative peace and quiet, broken only by a few attacks by monsters in the Wild. All of which were dispatched quickly and efficiently. He was glad that they could spend so much time just being together without needing conversation. He’d been in a few short-lived relationships where it seemed like the other person always needed to be talking. It was never a good sign.

“I don’t know much about it, but it’s rare,” he replied. “There aren’t hardly any settlements in the Emerald Wild, all of them very small. So far as I know, none of them have worked out, and they usually get burned down or destroyed or taken over by nature or looted out of existence. This one was up and running when I last went through. I get the feeling they were trying to serve as a trading post and security waypoint for adventurers in the Wild.
